<image:title>UTAH - Capitol Reef National Park - Sulphur Creek Trail</image:title>
<image:caption>Capitol Reef National Park in south-central Utah protects 378 square miles of desert landscape. The park was named for its rounded Navajo Sandstone dome formations which bear a resemblance to the United States Capitol building and for its sheer sandstone cliffs, often referred to as a "reef", that presented a barrier to early explorers. The sandstone formations cover a section of the Waterpocket Fold, the second largest monocline in North America. Capitol Reef National Park is an oasis of twisting canyons, colorful sandstone cliffs, soaring monoliths, ridges, buttes and badlands. A true adventure land. Sulphur Creek is an extremely rewarding back-country river hike through a deep and scenic gorge in Capitol Reef National Park. The 12-mile out and back trail starts at the Chimney Rock Trailhead and ends at the Capitol Reef National Park visitor center, dropping over 500 feet in elevation along the way. The trail follows the labyrinth of drainages into the Moenkopi Formation. Once the dry gulch joins with Sulphur Creek you will be wading in the creek for several miles. There's a mile long narrows section with 10', 12' and 6' waterfalls, deep pools and 600 feet tall sandstone cliff walls. Sulphur Creek is rated 2C II using the canyon rating system.</image:caption>

It is a vast one million acres of canyons, colorful sandstone cliffs rising above narrow slot canyons, natural bridges, washes, endless slickrock, monoliths, arches, prehistoric village sites and rugged, sun-drenched Utah back-country. It is a geological and paleontological dreamland. Its name refers to the steps in geologic layers of sandstone that are visible in the colorful sets of cliffs extending over the region. Several hundred Native American sites are spread throughout the protected land and fossil excavations in the monument have revealed more information about ecosystem change at the end of the dinosaur era than any other place in the world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM), located south of Capitol Reef National Park, currently covers roughly one million acres of America's protected lands and contains three geographically-distinct units: the Grand Staircase, Kaiparowits and the Escalante Canyons. Due to its remoteness, the area was the last part of the continental U.S. to be mapped. The protected area was reduced by almost 47 percent through a presidential proclamation in 2017. The proclamation allowed the protected public lands to be sold to fossil fuel companies and other private industries, threatening geological and paleontology research, petroglyphs, the area's endangered wildlife habitat and desert landscape.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bryce Canyon Hiking Trails: The 8.2 miles, strenuous Fairyland Loop Trail, located in the northern part of the park, is a hikers dream. The trail begins at Fairyland Point and travels 900 feet down the rim through the labyrinths of Fairyland and Campbell Canyons. Once you reach the bottom of the canyon you will be totally surrounded by the red hoodoos (some known as China Wall), spires and other bizarre looking formations. The trail will slowly climb out of the Campbell Canyon over a series of switchbacks., providing the surreal views of Fairyland Canyon and Sinking Ship Mesa. The 2.2 miles, strenuous Navajo Loop Trail takes you 800 feet down the rim from Sunset Point into the amphitheater, winding through the narrow corridors of a section called Wall Street (a collection of hoodoo formations), passing the Silent City (a metropolis of spires and hoodoos) and an intersection with Queens Garden Loop Trail as well as the top of Peekaboo Loop Trail. Some of the best, moderate-level hikes in Bryce Canyon National Park: Peekaboo Loop Trail, Queen's Garden Loop, Tower Bridge Hike, Bryce Canyon Rim Trail. <image:title>UTAH - Bryce Canyon National Park</image:title>
<image:caption>Bryce Canyon, located in the Dixie National Forest in southwestern Utah, technically is not a canyon but a group of intricately eroded, horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. These amphitheaters began as piled-up layers of silt, sand, and limy sediments from the skeletons and shells of living animals. The amphitheaters, along with numerous colorful pinnacles called hoodoos, slot canyons, fins, windows and other uniquely bizarre formations, create an enchanting, maze-like landscape that made Bryce Canyon National Park worldwide famous. The colorful sandstones, mudstones and Claron limestones have been shaped by thousands of years of erosion, especially during winter months when freezing water expands within the cracks of the rock and forces the limestone to break down. The largest is Bryce Amphitheater, filled with irregularly eroded capped domes and hoodoos that are up to 200 feet high. Bryce Amphitheater is 12 miles long, 3 miles wide and 800 feet deep.</image:caption>

The view of the Zion canyon from the highest vantage point in the park is breathtaking, although more distant than the view from the famous Angels Landing. It is due to the fact that Observation Point is located 700 feet higher than Angels Landing. Looking down into the canyon you will see the Virgin River snaking its way through the valley as well as an amazing display of stone formations - Angels Landing, the West Rim, Cathedral Mountain, the Three Patriarchs and Castle Dome to the right. To the left you will see the East Rim, Cable Mountain and Great White Throne. Farther away, at the southern section of Zion National Park is the Watchman.</image:caption>

The trail embraces the side of the cliff and is often exposed to dramatic drop-offs along the switchbacks. It follows the East Rim Trail up and out of the canyon, offering great views of the lower reaches of the canyon and a glimpse into the dark and narrow slot of Echo Canyon suspended 1,100 feet above the canyon floor. The Narrows begin just beyond the Mystery Canyon and from this point onward you will have to wade or swim to push on. Before 1851, the land belonged to the Southern Paiute Indians. They used to call it Mukuntuweap 'Straight Canyon' and the name most likely referred to Zion's dramatic canyon walls. In the 1850s, Mormon pioneers who became the first European settlers in the Virgin River area named it Zion after the Old Testament name for the city of Jerusalem. Zion means 'Place of refugee'.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Moab and the surrounding area are the natural breeding grounds for adventure. Driving on Moab's byways and backcountry roads provides unlimited panoramic views proving that the journey is often more important than a destination. The area's most scenic drives include Kane Creek which follows the eastern side of the Colorado River. After turning into a dirt road Kane Creek will take you to Kane Creek Canyon and eventually to Hurrah Pass. Highway 128, a 44-mile route is locally known as River Road. The road passes through a narrow red rock canyon before changing into an open desert landscape. La Sal Mountain Loop Road is a 60-mile drive through the La Sal Mountains full of alpine peaks and canyons that provide a strong contrast to Moab’s red rocks. The Potash Road, a 17-mile route takes you west along the twisty Colorado River to the site of a potash mine. The 18-mile scenic drive at Arches National Park traverses an amazing landscape of arches, balanced rocks, sky-scraping buttes and towers. The 35-mile Dead Horse Point Scenic Byway takes you through sandstone canyons atop the Island in the Sky. The breathtaking panorama of the Canyonlands at the Dead Horse Point which towers 2000 feet above the Colorado River is one of the most photographed scenes in the US. <image:caption>Canyonlands National Park is the largest national park in Utah located in southeastern part of the state near the town of Moab. The Colorado and Green rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the rivers themselves. The Park is known for its dramatic desert landscape formed by the currents and tributaries of Utah's Colorado and Green rivers. It is home to deep canyons, mesas, buttes, cliffs, towering rock pinnacles, arches and spires stretching across 527 square miles. Being wild, remote and exceptionally beautiful Canyonlands National Park provides great opportunities for stargazing, hiking, mountain biking, technical rock climbing, 4WD off-roading and whitewater rafting. It's a perfect playground for an adrenaline junkie. It is wild America.</image:caption>

      <image:title>UTAH - Hurrah Pass, Moab</image:title>
<image:caption>If you long for a scenically beautiful drive, head out to Hurrah Pass. It is a 19.5 mile out and back dirt road/trail which begins 5.5 miles southwest of Moab at the Colorado River Canyon. Proceed down into Kane Creek Canyon and after crossing Kane Creek, bear right and begin climbing up toward the Hurrah Pass. You will drive by massive boulders, balancing rocks, hoodoos and rock spires. There is a number of water crossings on the trail. During heavy rainfall, Kane Creek turns into a rushing river of mud and quicksand and crossing becomes impossible. The top of the pass offers great views of Kane Creek Canyon and the Colorado River Canyon into Canyonlands National Park. Yelling 'Hurrah' once you reach the top of the Hurrah Pass seems like a splendid idea.</image:caption>

<image:title>UTAH - Undercover Slot Canyon also known as Lost & Found Canyon, Arches National Park, Utah</image:title>
<image:caption>The Undercover Slot Canyon is one of the greatest slot canyons in Moab area. It is located in a remote part of Arches National Park and getting there requires at least 80 minutes drive from Moab on backcountry dirt roads. Cows alongside the dirt road are a common sight. It is a technical canyon rated as 3AII. There are three rappels in the canyon. The first rappel is over 40 feet long. The second one is about 80 feet and the last one is an impressive 135 feet. From the bottom of the second rappel we went downstream into a section which you need to crawl through. The very narrow chimney leads to the platform where the last rappel awaits. The 135 feet rappel is anchored by two bolts on the side of the canyon. From the bottom of the third rappel we hiked to the sandy drainage known as MMI Canyon. From there we had to make our way out by climbing the slick-rock (class 3-5 rock climb) covered with sand. It may sound easy, but turned out to be the toughest part of our canyoneering adventure. It was very windy and we kept on sliding down until we finally succeeded on third or fourth attempt.</image:caption>

      <image:title>UTAH - Undercover Slot Canyon</image:title>
<image:caption>Southern Utah has the largest concentration of slot canyons in the world. A slot canyon is a long, narrow and deep gorge with vertical rock walls that are eroded into sedimentary rock. It took millions of years of erosion during which water carved the sandstone walls into surreal curves and angles.</image:caption>

<image:title>UTAH - Repeat Jr. Slot Canyon located just outside of Arches National Park.</image:title>
<image:caption>We have made an unexpected and rather disturbing discovery while rappelling Repeat Jr. slot canyon. A caw in a process of decay was lying on the canyon floor. Poor animal must have wandered into the narrow gorge and eventually became a footstep for those rappelling down into the canyon.</image:caption>

Below-ground burials were not very successful as the coffins would often float back to the surface, especially during the city's frequent floods. The Garden District was created in the late 1840s by New Orleans’ American elite who did not want to live in the French Quarter with the Creoles. Most of the area we now call the Garden District was originally platted as the Faubourg Livaudais, created from the Livaudais plantation in 1832.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Grand Canyon, often considered to be one of the Wonders of the World, is located in the northwest corner of Arizona in Coconino County, close to the borders of Utah and Nevada. Most of the canyon lies within Grand Canyon National Park and is managed by the National Park Service, the Hualapai Tribal Nation and the Havasupai Tribe. The canyon is 277 miles long and more than a mile deep. Traveling by car, you will have to cover the distance of 220 miles to get from one rim of the canyon to the other. Traveling by foot via the Kaibab Trails, the distance across the canyon is only 21 miles. Kaibab is a Paiute Indian word meaning ‘mountain lying down.’ If you decide to venture below the rims of the canyon, you can either hike, take a mule trip or a river boat trip.</image:caption>

<image:title>ARIZONA - The Grand Canyon - The Bright Angel Trail</image:title>
<image:caption>The Bright Angel’s trailhead starts on the south rim at the Grand Canyon Village, descending 4380 feet to the Colorado river. The trail follows a path that Native Americans and 19th-century explorers took into the canyon, descending through series of switchbacks to the Indian Garden (4.8 miles) and a suspension bridge across the Colorado River to Bright Angel Campground (9.5 miles) and nearby Phantom Ranch (9.9 miles). It is the best maintained route into the canyon with an easy access to rest houses, toilets, emergency phones and most of all clean drinking water. It takes four to five hours to get to the campground and twice as long to get back. January temperatures at the south rim can drop as low as 18F. During our late June hike down the canyon the temperature reached 112F and it didn’t take us long to understand how vulnerable to the heat we were. Bring plenty of water, wear loose, breathable and moisture absorbing clothing as well as a full-brimmed hat.</image:caption>

Coal Mine Canyon, located on the border between the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservations in northeastern Arizona’s Painted Desert, is lined with reddish sand-stones and silt-stones of Mesozoic age. Standing on top of the rim one can see numerous hoodoos, cliffs, gullies and eroded spires. <image:title>ARIZONA - Monument Valley - The Wildcat Trail.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Monument Valley is a part of Colorado Plateau located on the Utah-Arizona border that stretches more than 90,000 acres. A plateau is a vast, elevated stretch of a land, bordered on at least one side by steep cliffs. The Colorado Plateau has been broken down by canyons into much smaller plateaus. Mesas are flat-topped remains of a plateau rising above the valley floor. In time, a continuing erosion will turn a mesa into a butte, an isolated rock formation with steep sides and a flat top that is as tall as it is wide. Eventually, an erosion will transform a butte into a pinnacle or a spire which, too, will collapse someday, joining the layers of red sand on the valley floor. The Wildcat Trail, a 3.2-mile loop hike that weaves among the iconic formations of Monument Valley, is one of the two trails in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park that visitors can hike without being escorted by an authorized guide. The trail loops around the West Mitten Buttte, offering scenic views of both East and West Mittens and Merrick Butte.</image:caption>

      <image:title>ARIZONA - Saguaro National Park</image:title>
<image:caption>Unique to the Sonoran Desert, the giant saguaro cacti can reach as high as 50 feet, weigh over 10 tons and live longer than 200 years. The tallest saguaro cactus ever measured towered over 78 feet into the air. Saguaros don’t grow above an elevation of about 4,000 feet since they can't survive low temperatures and frost. The temperature in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert often exceeds 100F and the land only receives 3-15 inches of rain annually. In order to survive saguaros had to develop special adaptation skills. One key for survival in the desert is how much water they can store. The more arms a saguaro has, the more water it can store and the more sites there are to be visited by potential pollinators increasing the plant's reproductive capacity. They may grow their first side arm any time from 75–100 years of age. Some saguaros never grow any arms.</image:caption>

      <image:title>ARIZONA - Saguaro National Park</image:title>
<image:caption>Giant Saguaros provide homes to a variety of birds. The gilded flicker and Gila woodpecker excavate nest cavities inside the saguaro’s pulpy flesh and use their burrows as protection against summer heat and harsh winter cold. Those birds typically wait several months before moving in to give the pulp of the cactus time to dry and create a solid casing around the cavity. Birds often drill holes to get to the water stored inside. The saguaro seals off the hole with scar tissue to prevent water loss. When a bird abandons a cavity, other birds such as screech owls, purple martins, cactus wrens, flycatchers, and finches move in. Red-tailed hawks, great horned owls and ravens use saguaros for nesting and hunting platforms.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Saguaros, the supreme symbol of the American Southwest, are uniquely beautiful. Having said that, one cannot forget that their beauty far exceeds the shade they offer. Summer temperatures in the Sonoran Desert can soar to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and it is very easy to get dehydrated while chasing sunsets or other amazing vistas. Therefore, whether you are taking an easy nature trail hike or a day-long back-country trek, make sure you drink lots of water and minimize food intake - food requires water for digestion.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The wild flowers blooming season extends from early to late March. In April and June the saguaro themselves bloom producing delicate, creamy-white blossoms. The blooms open at night and live through the following afternoon providing a window of opportunity for their pollinators - bees, wasps, bats, moths, butterflies, ants, beetles, white-winged doves, orioles, Gila woodpeckers, hummingbirds, house finches, gilded flickers, curve-billed thrashers and verdins visiting the flowers for nectar. The blooms mature into red fruits - a source of nutrition for numerous desert animals as well as desert tribes. The fallen fruits feed bobcats, coyotes, wood rats, Harris’ antelope squirrels, black-tailed jackrabbits, mule deer, javelinas (a member of a family of mammals known as the peccaries), desert tortoise, and many others. The saguaro’s bloom is Arizona’s state flower.</image:caption>

The mountain is considered to be one of the easiest and the most unremarkable of the 14ers to climb, however, it should not be underestimated. High altitude and strong winds will make you work hard before you reach the summit. The most popular route to the summit is from the east, via Fairplay and Fourmile Creek and passes the ruins of Dauntless and Hilltop Mines. If you park your car at Fourmile Creek at 11,950 feet, your round-trip hike to the summit will be slightly over 5 miles and you will only climb 2,100 feet of elevation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On a sunny day, from the summit of Mount Sherman you'll have sweeping views of the Sawatch Range to the West, the Mosquito and Ten Mile ranges to the north, and the South Park grassland basin to the East. On a day I hiked, dense fog concealed the trail in an eerie white veil. As I gained elevation, the fog thickened and I caught myself wondering what could be lurking in the white space ahead. A grizzly bear? Highly impossible. The last one was killed in 1979. A ghost of an infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy? A mountain goat? A glimmer of hope for an unusual encounter quickly vanished into thin air when a few hikers slowly passed me on their way down from the summit.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At 14,040 feet Conundrum Peak is a northern sub-summit of Castle Peak. The distance between the summit of Castle Peak and the summit of Conundrum Peak is only 0.6 miles and that is why both peaks are often hiked jointly via the saddle between them. There are several couloirs on the sides of both mountains that allow back-country skiing descents. Glissading through patches of snowfields is another , both fast and enjoyable, way of descending the mountain.</image:caption>

      <image:title>COLORADO - Castle Peak Trail - The Elk Mountains</image:title>
<image:caption>At 14,279 feet Castle Peak, located near Aspen, is the highest summit of the Elk Mountains and the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. It is considered to be the easiest (difficult class 2) 14er in the Elk Range to climb with only 1,500 feet of elevation gain if you start your ascent at the highest trailhead at about 12,800 feet (high clearance 4WD vehicle required to get to this trailhead). There are two non-technical, class 2 routes for ascent. The Northwest Ridge is characterized by an average snow climb and a relatively easy ridge scramble that follows. The snow climb on the Northeast Ridge is not steep, but the route requires more scrambling. Both routes have some exposed, loose rock sections. Castle Peak may not be as difficult or exposed as Maroon Bells, Capitol Peak, Snowmass Mountain or some other 14ers in the Elk Range, nevertheless, due to notoriously loose rock hikers should exercise caution.</image:caption>

      <image:title>COLORADO - Argentine Pass, Rocky Mountains - 13,207 ft</image:title>
<image:caption>Argentine Pass, elevation 11,600 to 13,207 feet, is a high mountain pass that used to be a wagon road over the Continental Divide, Rocky Mountains. In 1864 silver was discovered near Argentine Pass which at that time was known as Sanderson Pass, named after a family that ran a stagecoach over the pass. The discovery of silver and gold deposits resulted in a creation of the Argentine Mining District. The Latin name for silver is 'argenti' which may explain why the pass was renamed Argentine Pass. It connects Clear Creek and Summit Counties. Only the eastern (Georgetown) side of this narrow and steep pass is drivable during the summer and early fall months by a 4WD high- clearance vehicle.</image:caption>
